Hampton's Heritage

Hampton University offers a range of opportunities for student participation and leadership development. There are fraternities, sororities, and a student government to run. There are honor societies in various disciplines, as well as literary, military, and music organizations. You can choose from acting or architecture, dancing or debating--from chemistry or counseling, physical fitness or free enterprise, business, broadcasting, opera, or marine science. And that's only the beginning.

Students find countless opportunities to study with classmates in the serene atmosphere of the waterfront, saunter along the river's edge, or stroll across our grassy campus on walkways lined with trees and studded with benches.

The University's Concert Choir has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and other great concert halls in 25 states and Europe, as well as for president Clinton at the 53rd U.S. Presidential Inauguration Ceremony.

Exceptional students identified as Presidential Scholars receive scholarships and may become members of the Honors College. They also receive housing benefits and live in residential facilities with a computer and access to the Internet in each room.

Honors College students study and conduct research in programs at institutions such as Yale, Harvard, and Oxford. They have participated in initiatives with NASA and traveled to Bangladesh and Tanzania.

The Leadership Institute develops entry-level leaders with the character and integrity to ethically lead and serve. Hampton is the only HBCU to offer an undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies.

The Hampton University Student Leadership Program is recognized as a national model for colleges and universities. The program involves students in intensive activities and develop their interpersonal skills, assess their individual leadership styles, and acquaint them with leadership theory and dynamics.

The Terpsichorean Dance Company has performed at Hampton University and in the surrounding community to showcase the talents of Hampton students who have studied Tap, Ballet, African, Jazz, Modern, and many other dance forms. Each year the Terpsichorean Company holds two annual concerts in the fall and spring seasons as well as numerous outreach performances in the Hampton Roads community. The company serves Hampton University Students through a plethora of guest performances on campus for various student and administrative functions.

The International Studies Program sends dozens of Hampton University students abroad each year to travel, study and conduct research.

The University's International Students Association provides opportunities for intellectual, social, and recreational interaction in a multicultural atmosphere.

The Underwater Explorers Club provides opportunities for University divers to expand their knowledge of the underwater environment.

The University encourages students to attend Sunday morning worship services in Hampton's Memorial Church. Members of the Student Christian Association serve as worship leaders.
