In 2000-2001, the Division of Continuing Studies furthered its mission
of serving students “wherever, whenever, and however they
choose” by opening their doors in Western Virginia. Located
in downtown Roanoke at the Roanoke Higher Education Center, the
DoCS offers its unique format and array of programs to the citizens
of the Roanoke Valley and Western Virginia.
Hampton University’s Division of Continuing Studies has the
distinction of being the only new entrant into the Roanoke education
market with this venture. The twelve remaining institutes of higher
education were already offering programs in Roanoke or were located
within an hour of downtown. The DoCS ’s broad range of programs,
its unique format, flexibility of scheduling and affordable tuition,
made HU an attractive participant in the center. By offering unique
programs such as Fire Administration and Paralegal Studies as well
as more traditional programs such as Business Management and General
Studies, the DoCS appeals to a diverse population of adult learners.
HU’s participation in the RHEC also brings the presence of
an HBCU to Western Virginia providing additional opportunities to
serve students and the community.
In addition to degree and certificate programs at the RHEC non-credit
courses, short courses, seminars and computer training courses will
also be available. The DoCS will also serve the College Level Evaluation
Program (CLEP) testing center for the Roanoke Valley. Hampton has
in place five traditional classrooms and a fully connected twelve-station
computer lab to facilitate the learning experience. While students
are currently able to enroll in courses during evenings, weekends,
and online, future programs will also be offered during the day.
