General Description: The A PLUS (A+) Program is for pre-college students ages 12-16 who want an adventurous and exciting summer experience. This year’s theme is Aviation in the 21st Century: Are You Ready to Soar? For one week, there will be an intense focus on Academics and Activities, Preparation and Performance, Leaning, Understanding and Service. Enrollment is limited.

Cost: $500.00; A $50 non-refundable deposit must accompany the application.

Academics and Activities - The participants will examine the origins of aviation flight from the Wright Brothers to Astronaut Leland D. Melvin, a Virginia native. The student will gain hands on experience by exploring various jobs in aircraft maintenance such as electronics, sheet metal, and engine repair. The history of the Tuskegee Airmen will be discussed with Original Airmen from the Tidewater Chapter. The student will participate in activities such as aerobics, beginning equestrian, board games, bowling, quiz bowl and water sports.

Preparation and Performance - Preparing young people for leadership positions and the responsibilities associated with being a leader is a key element of the A+ residential program. The students will utilize their newfound skills through various team building activities to establish a foundation for future success in the classroom and life.

Learning - Each student will have an opportunity to debate, discuss, and participate in a mock caucus for the upcoming Presidential Election.

Understanding - The student will appreciate the importance of math and science as both pertain to amusement park rides.

Service - The student will evaluate the importance of service learning programs in the community.
