Mission Statement for the Electrical Engineering Program

The mission of the Department of Electrical and computer Engineering is to provide a state-of-the-art, academically enriched, environment for students such that they will acquire the knowledge necessary for entry-level positions as professional engineers and/or for graduate school.  Along with a technical education, our graduates are prepared to cultivate a capacity for creative and dynamic thinking, and to foster a desire to contribute to the culture and society in which they live.  The goals and objectives of the Department of Electrical Engineering are to educate men and women to a high level of technological competency and social responsibility.  Upon graduation, students are expected to fulfill their responsibilities as professional engineers.  Furthermore, all students will develop the skills and acquire the basic knowledge necessary to be successful in graduate study or in entry-level positions as electrical or computer engineers.

Service courses, including basic electrical circuits, engineering analysis, and general engineering courses are provided to other degree programs in physics, aviation, marine science, music engineering technology and computer science.

Department Goals

  • To provide a challenging state-of-the art engineering education for all students so that they can attain the highest level of technical competency.
  • To educate men and women to enable them to strive to make noteworthy contributions to the engineering profession.
  • To help increase the pool of well-qualified, under-represented minorities in the engineering profession.
  • To provide adequate preparation for an engineering education to those students who may have some deficiencies in their secondary education background.
  • To educate men and women to foster in them a social and environmental awareness and understanding that will enable them to fulfill their responsibilities as productive citizens in the general society abiding by professional ethics.
  • To educate and prepare engineering students for graduate education and/or professional careers.
  • To provide an engineering academic learning environment conductive to intellectual and creative growth.

Electrical Engineering Department Program Outcomes

At the completion of the Electrical Engineering degree program, all students are expected to:

  • Demonstrate competencies basic to success in graduate study or function as a professional electrical or computer engineer.
  • Solve problems related to the operation of basic electrical or computer systems and interpretation of the results.
  • Demonstrate competencies related to the:
    • the design of simple ac and dc electrical and computer system development of an alternate system, and
    • selection of the best alternative that will be economical, efficient and environmentally acceptable.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of the importance of environmental.
  • Demonstrate preservation, quality production, safety, and loss prevention when working with electrical and computer systems.
  • Demonstrate a level of oral communication skills required for presenting written technical reports and articles for review.
  • Demonstrate skills in finding appropriate technical information and data to solve electrical engineering problems.
  • Work effectively in groups to accomplish assigned tasks and objectives related to electrical engineering.
  • To provide graduates with the ability to identify and solve societal problems employing the practical application of relevant knowledge in an effective and professional manner.
  • To provide graduates with an appreciation for the effects of professional decisions on the well being of society.
  • To make graduates aware of the importance to remain professionally competent through self-study and through the pursuit of advanced graduate-level education.
