The School of Liberal Arts is the primary liberal arts component of Hampton University. The School provides over 50% of the general education core instruction through English, speech, history, humanities, social sciences, and foreign languages if required. The School has two divisions: Arts and Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and nine departments and programs. The School is home to University Choirs, Bands, Debate and Forensics, Hampton Players and Company, and the annual Hampton University Read-in. The School will begin a major in Criminal Justice and Criminology in 2008 and already has a certificate program in Cinema Studies.
The School has a number of noted graduates including former Good Morning America weather forecaster Spencer Christian, casting director Robi Reed, and costume designer for most Spike Lee movies, Ruth Carter. The Department of English is in the top twenty.
