SERVICES

The Writing Technology Laboratory is a free service administered by the Department of English to provide support for student writers and faculty across campus. The Lab's services include:

· individual and small group tutoring
· workshops for students and faculty
· access to Internet and print writing resources
· faculty consultations
· the online writing lab (OWL)

Individual and small group tutoring

A staff of faculty from the Department of English and trained peer tutors from a variety of disciplines provides free individual and small group tutoring for students at all stages of the writing process. They can help students to understand writing assignments, develop research strategies, generate ideas, use prewriting strategies, organize ideas, structure essays, identify areas for revision, improve editing and proofreading skills, develop "action plans" for papers, and review grammar and mechanics. Tutors will NOT write any portion of a student's paper, correct or edit the paper for the student, tutor the course subject matter, or comment on a professor's assignments or grades. Faculty members who wish to refer students to the Writing Lab may print out a referral form for students to bring to their sessions. Tutoring is available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. To schedule an appointment call 727-5686.

Workshops for students and faculty

Several times each semester, the Writing Lab conducts workshops for students and faculty at the request of individual departments and organizations or the University Writing Program. Students and faculty may suggest topics or request workshops by e-mailing the Writing Lab Director. You may view PowerPoint presentations of past workshops here.

Faculty consultation

Faculty consultations are available by appointment. Writing Lab faculty tutors will work with faculty from other departments on issues related to writing and teaching writing, including assisting with work in progress, reviewing writing assignments and assessment instruments, and suggesting strategies for particular aspects of the teaching of writing. To request a consultation, e-mail the Writing Lab Director.

Access to Internet, computer assisted, and print resources

The Writing Lab is equipped with Pentium workstations and Internet access, as well as a small library of CD-ROM and print writing resources. Tutors can assist students with searching library and Internet sources and using CD-ROM and print references on a variety of topics related to the writing process, grammar, diction, style, mechanics, and documentation, of sources using major academic styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, and CSE).

The Online Writing Lab (OWL)

The Writing Lab is building this online writing lab (OWL) to make many of its resources available to all users via the Internet. The HU OWL includes links to helpful writing resources, workshop PowerPoint presentations, and a variety of resources for writers and writing teachers. If you would like to suggest topics to be included on this site, e-mail the Writing Lab Director.
