The English Major

The major in English is designed to provide a broadly humanistic education that prepares graduates for success in a wide range of fields, including publications and public relations, law, and education. The curriculum includes in its offerings courses which reflect the University's historical identity and enrich the traditional literary "canon." In accordance with this vision, the Department of English has developed a guiding set of specific goals.

 

Curriculum

The Department offers majors in English Arts and English Education, as well as a minors in English Arts.

English Arts majors select from an unusually large number of free electives. Students can concentrate many of their electives in other disciplines, such as business, or use them to explore particular areas of interest within the major.

English Education majors enter a five-year program in which they earn both a B.A. in English and a Master's in Teaching. They have a choice of preparation for Elementary or Middle/Secondary Education tracks.

 

Special Opportunities

Study Abroad: The English Department offers students the opportunity to study for a summer, a semester, or a year in the historic city of Bath, England, under the auspices of the Advanced Studies in England program. Students choose from a wide range of courses taught by guest faculty from University College, Oxford University.

Internships: English majors pursue internship opportunities in a wide range of professional fields, including writing, editing, public relations, law, business, finance, government, and education.
