  Requirements

Brass & Woodwind Instruments

  • Scales: All major scales and chromatic scale, two octaves where possible.
  • Etudes: Any prepared etude or technical study showing the student's technical proficiency.
  • Solo: One work from the standard repertory or a solo of at least a Grade 3.
  • Sight-Reading: Demonstrate the ability to read music at sight for each instrument above.

Percussion

  • Snare Drum: Demonstrate basic drum rudiment plus strokes and rolls at all dynamics.
  • Mallets:
    1. Perform major scales through four sharps and flats, also a chromatic scale of at least two octaves.
    2. A two mallet solo piece or etude that demonstrates proficiency on the instrument.
  • Timpani: Demonstrate the ability to tune and roll at all dynamic levels.
  • Sight-Reading: Demonstrate the ability to read at sight music for each instrument above.

String Instruments

  • Scales: Choose five major scales and play 3 octaves.
  • Slowly for tone and intonation, play 3 notes to a bow stroke.
  • Faster for facility and intonation, play 6 to 12 notes to a bow stroke.
  • Arpeggios: Same scale as above. (Major or Minor)
  • Etudes: Any prepared etude or technical study demonstrating student's proficiency.
  • Solos: Perform two contrasting solos that best demonstrate technique, range, and lyric ability.
  • Sight-Reading: Demonstrate the ability to read music at sight for each instrument above.

Voice

  • At least one prepared song or aria preferably selected from the standard vocal repertoire. This work may be performed in English or in a foreign language. The student should choose music, which he or she is able to perform comfortably, and would best reveal the warmth and beauty of the voice.
  • The auditioner will ask the singer to execute selected vocal exercises, to be determined after hearing the performed work.
  • The singer will be asked to sight read a portion of a selected score for assessment of skills.

Keyboard: Piano & Organ

Piano

  • Scales: All ascending and descending diatonic major and minor scales, two octaves.
  • Arpeggios: All ascending and descending major and minor arpeggios, two octaves.
  • Repertory: Representative compositions selected from the Baroque, Classical Romantic and Twentieth-Century styles.
  • Sight Reading: At the level of the Community (Patriotic) song.

Organ

  • Scales and Arpeggios: The same as for Piano
  • Technique: Knowledge of basic manual and pedal techniques based on Gleason, Johnson, or Dupre demonstrated at intermediate level or trio playing.
  • Solo (Repertory): Chorale preludes (easier) selected from Dupre, Buxtehude, Bach, etc.
  • Sight Reading: At the level of the hymn.
