  Chairman's Statement

Recognized by U.S. News as the nation's leading department for producing African American undergraduate psychology majors, the Department of Psychology at Hampton University has emerged as a vibrant department with active and dedicated faculty offering a rigorous and rewarding curriculum. The Department is committed to the development of new knowledge regarding the bases of behavior, psychological processes, and the dissemination and application of knowledge. To accomplish these goals, the Department strives to advance programs of excellence in teaching, research, and service within the context of its undergraduate program, and the goals of School of Liberal Arts and Education at Hampton University. Given that career paths in Psychology require graduate training, the psychology major is directed toward helping majors meet the knowledge prerequisites of the highly competitive graduate training programs in Psychology that exist throughout the U.S.A. superior undergraduate experience is gained from the involved student.

Psychology Department Objectives

The Department provides opportunities for students to explore careers in psychology by encouraging undergraduate student research and field placements. The overarching goal of our teaching efforts is to promote students' life-long learning and "thinking like a psychologist." We create a personal and caring environment for students enrolled in our courses. This is accomplished through a variety of applied experiences including research, service learning, internships, and classroom learning activities. Through a departmental advisory system the faculty aids the psychology major to find and pursue his or her area of greatest interest. The Department hosts a chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, which supports, encourages and promotes high scholastic attainment in the major. In addition, the department sponsors a psychology club where membership is open to all psychology majors.

The Department of Psychology uses it human, fiscal, and physical resources to provide a quality learning environment for its undergraduate students. Expert and qualified faculty challenge, motivate and inspire students in modern and well-equipped classrooms. Department faculty strengthen their understanding of study through research and scholarly activity, and they provide services consistent with the mission of the University.
