Distinction
in academic achievement makes students eligible for membership
in the Sociology Club, the International Sociology Honor Society
(Alpha Kappa Delta), Alpha Phi Sigma, and other academic honors
programs, including the Minority Opportunities through School
Transformation (MOST) Program and the Career Opportunities
in Research Program (COR).
The Sociology Club
The Sociology club is designed to facilitate an environment
for academic and professional development and for community
involvement. The student club serves as a vehicle to:
- Current information in the field
- Forums
- Sponsored student activities
- Fullfilment of the departmental mission to support activities
which reflect a commitment to the community

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD)
Membership in AKD is a prestigious honor for sociology
students. The goal and purpose of AKD is to:
- Promote the study of social issues
- Serve
mankind through community involvement
- Enhance academic and professional development
- Provide an extracurricular outlet for students
interested in the study of sociology

Alpha Phi Sigma
Alpha Phi Sigma is the only National Criminal Justice
Honor Society for students interested in criminal justice
and criminology. The Gamma Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma
at Hampton University recognizes the academic excellence of
undergraduate students of:
- Criminal justice
- Criminology
- Law
Minority Opportunities through School
Transformation (MOST)
The American Sociological Association, through the Ford
Foundation, selected Hampton University as one of the sites
for the MOST Program. Students selected to participate
in the MOST Program attended a summer institute at a major
research institution.
Career Opportunities in Research
(COR)
The goal of the National Institute of Mental Health COR
Program is to strengthen research experiences in scientific
disciplines related to mental health. Each year, honor students
in psychology and sociology receive rigorous and challenging
research experiences at Hampton University and other satellite
research universities to prepare them for research careers
in mental health.
