Departmental Dinner

The dinner is always a success because students can enjoy an internationally themed dinner in a relaxed atmosphere and faculty get to enjoy the evening too, interacting with students outside of the classroom.

After the meal, chemistry majors reflect on the previous year and are recognized for academic achievement. Awards are given to the outstanding Freshman, Sophomore and Junior for performance in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, respectively. This year two students were awarded the Outstanding Sophomore Award for their performance in Organic Chemistry. The course grade and overall GPA were considered and a tie was declared.

Another part of the evening's program often includes an alumnus who spends time with us and discusses their career path after graduation. Each year Dr. Urasa tries to contact and bring back alumni who have gone on to graduate school and professional careers. This year we were pleased to greet Dr. Jamila (Greene) Cole and Ms. Kristen Finch. They each gave talks to encourage our Chemistry majors. Dr. Cole traced her career path and imparted advice to keep working hard. She received her PhD form Purdue in Physical Chemistry and currently works in Georgia. She expressed that she had a transforming experience as an undergraduate when she traveled to Tanzania. Ms. Finch gave a presentation on life as a graduate student and concluded with her current and on-going research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Thanks to our invited guests for a great evening.

On February 19th, 2010, the School of Science will be presenting the 15th Annual Student Research Day Symposium and the Department of Chemistry is hosting. The theme for this year is "Undergraduate Research: A Tranformational Experience". Plans include a keynote speaker and events highlighting student research in the School of Science and the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Patricia D. Hatch received a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant to support new research initiatives in food toxins.

As always, we look forward to hearing from alumni and hope that everyone is doing well.
