  Safety Discussions/Student Training
During the first laboratory meeting, each student should review the laboratory safety rules, then sign and return the lower portion to the instructor. Instructors should review the safety sheet with the class.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SEEKING ADVICE AND GUIDANCE WHEN IN DOUBT ABOUT PROCEDURES OR POTENTIAL HAZARDS.

The following topics should be discussed
during the first laboratory meeting:

Safety equipment

Shower, eye wash, fire extinguisher, fume hoods.

Goggles

Goggles are required. The use of contact lenses in the laboratory is prohibited.

Storage of personal effects

Students should place books, coats, etc. in areas that do not block aisles or pose as safety problems.

Emergency

In an emergency or if an accident occurs, the student's responsibility is to inform the instructor. Accident forms should be filled out. CAMPUS EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER: 5666. Remain calm.

First aid

The first aid kits are located in room 207 and 308 prep room. All injuries are to be reported to the instructor.

Fire

Students should report all fires to the instructor immediately. Extinquishers are located in every lab. Make everyone aware of the exits and planned evacuations in the event of a fire drill or evacuation.

Waste disposal

Students should be reminded that each lab assignment has it own hazards and disposal procedures. They should review each experiment prior to class and be familiar with the hazards.

Personal Protective equipment

Recommended gloves and/or lab coats.

Sink

Do not put paper or solids in the sink or troughs.

Other

Review glass handling, care of the thermometers (mercury spills), hot iron rings, and splattering of chemicals or water.

Common materials

Tape, strikers soap, kimwipes, distilled water. Return ring stands to side area.

Pre-lab discussion

Every pre-lab should include safety aspects and potential hazards.
Instructors are reminded that safety and safe procedures should be highlighted.
