Preparation for Real-Life
The academic program
in Communicative Sciences and Disorders
is designed to disseminate existing knowledge of speech, language and hearing disorders, and to provide clinical experience in the recognition, assessment/diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language and hearing disorders. The academic program ultimately prepares students for graduate study in speech-language pathology and audiology.
Valuable Experience
Students engage in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic experiences under the direct supervision of ASHA-certified faculty and clinical staff. These experiences include individual case management (assessment and treatment), group therapy, and diagnostic evaluations. Through the Hampton University Speech, Language and Hearing Clinics,
students are given the opportunity to serve children and adults with diverse communication disorders, such
as articulation and language delays, hearing impairments, aphasia, voice disorders, fluency disorders, aural rehabilitation, dialect and accent reduction. Further, students are exposed to social aspects of communication.

The M.A. program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
ASHA Certification
Curriculum development within the department is strongly influenced by the academic and clinical education requirements of ASHA. The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in Communicative and Disorders is designed to prepare students to meet the academic and practicum requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. Small classes facilitate individual instruction and attention for all students. Students are provided the opportunity to develop their research skills through the required completion of a pilot research project or by collaboration with faculty in their research.
Academic Planning
An individual plan of study is designed with each student, based upon his or her undergraduate background. Students with special needs are encouraged to provide documentation of their special needs to the Office of Student Support Services in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The Office of Student Support Services will develop a Section 504 Accommodations Plan and provide copies of the student’s plan to his/her instructors. The student is encouraged to use all student support services provided by the university including tutors, note takers, etc. and the student is encouraged to report all violations of his/her accommodations plan to the Section 504 Officer.
