Summer Programs offered by School of Science
The School of Science is hosting a number of exciting summer programs for middle school, high school, college, and graduate students, as well as middle and high school teachers and college faculty. Each program has a unique aim, but all share the common goal of utilizing the resources of the School of Science to enrich the academic well being of their participants. All programs are supported by grants from external funding agencies.
The Young Doctors Program
The Young Doctors Program is a summer science enrichment program for rising 7th, and 8th grade students. Thirty middle school students are participating. Contact the director, Dr. Claudia Rankins, at claudia.rankins@hamptonu.edu.
The Center for Laser Science and Spectroscopy Summer Outreach
The Center for Laser Science and Spectroscopy Summer Outreach Program offers research opportunities for several high school students for the summer. Contact the outreach director, Jan Mangana, at jan.mangana@hamptonu.edu.
The Science, Mathematics, and English Enrichment Program (SMEEP) and the Biology Enrichment Program
The Science, Mathematics, and English Enrichment Program (SMEEP) and the Biology Enrichment Program are five-week residential summer programs designed to help students with a declared major in science, engineering, or mathematics bridge the gap between high school and college. Fifty students are participating. The Rising Sophomore Summer Institute (RSSI)
The Rising Sophomore Summer Institute (RSSI) introduces ten Hampton University undergraduate science and engineering students to research. Contact the director, Dr. Claudia Rankins, at claudia.rankins@hamptonu.edu.
The Undergraduate Institute in Physics (UnIPhy) and the COSM Undergraduate Summer Program (CUSP)
The Undergraduate Institute in Physics (UnIPhy) and the COSM Undergraduate Summer Program (CUSP) provide research opportunities in nuclear, particle, optical, and medical physics and in atmospheric sciences to undergraduate students. Nineteen students from across the country are participating. The Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT)
The Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) program is an international research program for undergraduate students. Fourteen students from across the country and two faculty members are participating. Nine of the students are at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and five at Benin University, Nigeria. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, MD, provides research opportunities for three HU computer science majors. Contact Dr. Chutima Boonthum at chutima.boonthum@hamptonu.edu.
The Multicultural Students At Sea Together (MAST)
The Multicultural Students At Sea Together (MAST) involves twelve students in a month-long exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. The students come from across the US. Contact the director, Dr. Benjamin Cuker at benjamin.cuker@hamptonu.edu.
The Hampton University Graduate School (HUGS)
The Hampton University Graduate School (HUGS) is a summer school designed for second- and third-year graduate students in experimental and theoretical Nuclear/Particle physics. Twenty-one students from across the globe are participating. Contact the director, Dr. Cynthia Keppel, at keppel@jlab.org.
Project TILDA - Teaching, Implementation and Learning in Digital Age
Project TILDA - Teaching, Implementation and Learning in Digital Age is a program to help prepare high school mathematics teachers to use technology in the classroom. Contact the director, Dr. Arun Verma, at arun.verma@hamptonu.edu.
Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)
