Structure of Matter (COSM)
Summer Program for Undergraduate Physics
Students
at
HAMPTON UNIVERSITY

Duration: 8 weeks
Dates: June 3rd to July 27th, 2007
Compensation: $4,200 + Room
+ Board + Travel
Area of Research:
(1) Experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics. Experiments are
performed at Hampton University, CERN (Switzerland), and Thomas
Jefferson lab( NewPort News).
(2) Grid computing at Hampton University
(3) Theoretical Particle physics research at Hampton University
and University of Maryland
This program is for undergraduate physics students, and includes
research, seminars, and social activities. It runs from June
3 through July 27, 2007, with a two-week introductory session
followed by a research session. COSM is a Physics Frontier Center
funded by the National Science Foundation, the only such Center
in Particle Physics. It focuses on exciting research at the frontiers
of particle physics, using world-leading laboratories such as
the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and CERN in
Europe, as well as on-campus facilities.
This summer program
is unique in that it has two parts. The first part is a two-week
period of intensive familiarization with the tools of the trade
and with the issues at the frontiers of research. The second
part is a six-week session where the students will work in
a research environment pursuing cutting-edge physics. The program
is designed so that the students will gain a thorough understanding
of concepts and issues in particle physics, and will be confident
of their ability to work in a forefront research lab environment.
The
first, two-week, session has a three-prong approach. The morning
sessions will consist of hands-on training in math,
physics
and computer skills. Students will be given individual attention
and their progress will be monitored daily. This will be
very intensive and definitely not for the faint of heart! The
afternoon
sessions will have two components: seminars on the frontiers
of physics research and hands-on training on laboratory techniques
and instruments. During the second session, the students
will perform research at the frontiers of particle and nuclear
physics
in laboratories on the Hampton University campus. The research
projects include detector development for large particle
physics experiments, computer simulations, grid computing, electronics,
and data analysis. Those students interested in theoretical
physics will also be accommodated.
Social events and exploration
of the
local area will also be part of the program. Hampton University
is located close to summer resorts and entertainment venues,
such as Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. It is
expected that the students will enthusiastically participate
in all
aspects of this COSM summer program.
COSM will pay the students
(1) airfare
to and from their place of origin, (2) dormitory room
and board
on the Hampton University campus, and (3) a $4,200 stipend
for the 8 week program.
