NHAA - Montgomery County, MD Chapter
  About Us

The Alumni Affairs Office at Hampton University was contacted about starting a local Chapter in July 2000. It noted that the Montgomery County, MD Chapter had been listed as "inactive" for a number of years. After receiving guidance and support from Brenda Spruell, Vice-President, Middle-Atlantic Region, NHAA, Inc., notices were mailed inviting area alumni to a series of hospitality events. The events were held in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland on four consecutive Thursdays from August through September 2001. Eleven alumni who attended signed membership applications although no dues were collected.

Based on this positive response, invitations were mailed to 100 alumni to attend an organizational meeting on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at the residence of Arthur Jackson, Class of 1972. Five persons attended this meeting including Calvin Nelson, President of the Northern Virginia Chapter, NHAA, Inc. Alumni present supported the idea of restarting the Montgomery County Chapter and another meeting was planned.

A newsletter, including a meeting notice and draft set of Bylaws, was mailed to all area alumni. Five alumni attended the meeting on November 17, 2001 at the Potomac Branch of the Montgomery County Library along with Brenda Spruell and Calvin Nelson. After stirring remarks from Ms. Spruell, the alumni present unanimously voted to apply for recognition of the new Montgomery County, MD Chapter by the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. Each member present was also voted an officer in the new organization. The first slate of officers consisted of Arthur F. Jackson, Jr., '72, President; Toni Johnson-Conner, '75, Membership Chair; Robin Ford, '84, Treasurer; Lee David Harris, Jr., '84, Public Relations Chair; and Lenora Sherard, '58, Secretary.

In November 23, 2001 a letter was mailed to the Office of Alumni Affairs requesting recognition of the renewed chapter followed by a letter the NHAA Credentials Committee on January 28, 2002. The Chapter Charter (dated May 17, 2001) was subsequently awarded and 22 "charter" members joined by June 2002.
