MME 200 Media in a Multicultural Society Lecture 3 Credit Hours
This course surveys the mass media, their economics, influence
on and relationship to society. It distinguishes the press from other
media and highlights the press’ First Amendment rights and responsibilities
in a democracy. It examines the press’ and other media’s roles and obligations
in a culturally diverse society. It prepares majors and non-majors to
be informed citizens and participants in a media-saturated world, to be
knowledgeable critics of different forms of the mass media and to hold
the press and other media accountable to high standards.
Required of all department majors. Open to non-majors.
MME 202 Precision Language Lab 2 Credit Hours
This course teaches the language skills and writing styles needed
by journalists and other communications professionals. It stresses grammar,
the Associated Press stylebook, punctuation, spelling and sentence structures
for writing well, vividly and correctly for a mass audience. It teaches
students the need and skills for precision in their use of language in
journalism and the communications professions.
Required of all department majors.
MME 201 Reporting and Newswriting 1 Lab 3 Credit Hours
This is the foundation course for all sequences in the department.
It teaches research methods for gathering information, critical thinking
to analyze the comparative importance of the information, and interview
techniques. It builds strong skills in writing and language use. It gives
students practice in reporting and writing in basic news story formats
and styles that also are applicable to other communications professions.
It introduces students to the demands of quickly and accurately gathering
information, analyzing it and writing on deadline.
Required of all department majors.
MME 204 Principles of Advertising Lecture 3 Credit Hours
This course introduces students to the basic principles of advertising
and its relationship to different
forms of media, marketing and consumers. It includes theories, strategies,
and elements of visual design, copy writing and sales.
Required of all advertising majors.
Prerequisite:
MME 201 or permission of the instructor.
MME 209 Introduction to Public Relations Lecture 3 Credit Hours
This course introduces students to the basic concepts of public
relations. It surveys principles, theories, strategies, techniques and
practices of the public relations profession.
Required of all public relations majors.
Prerequisite:
MME 201 or permission of instructor.
MME 214 Reporting and Newswriting 2 Lab 3 Credit Hours
This course builds on and strengthens reporting and newswriting
skills gained in MME 201. It teaches basic beat and public affairs reporting,
such as police, fire, city council and courts. It introduces students
to “issues” beats focused on such topics as health, religion, business,
multicultural and minority affairs, urban affairs and technology. It requires
students to choose a beat, cultivate sources, develop story ideas and
write news and feature stories from the beat.
Required of all print journalism majors.
