Dr. Eddith Dashiell

Dr. Eddith A. Dashiell comes to the department for the fall 2001 semester from the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University-Athens, where she is associate professor of journalism and assistant director for undergraduate studies.

Dr. Dashiell has been a faculty member there since 1992. She was named associate director for undergraduate instruction and curriculum in 1998. Her teaching interests include broadcast journalism, communications law and information gathering. Dr. Dashiell began her teaching career at Middle Tennessee State University in 1986 after an eight-year career as a broadcast journalist.

Dr. Dashiell completed her doctorate at Indiana University in 1992. Her educational background also includes a master of arts degree in history and a bachelor of science degree in telecommunications from Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Dashiell's professional background includes work as an assistant weekend producer for WSMV-TV, Nashville; news director for KWMU-FM, St. Louis; freelance reporter for National Public Radio and Associated Press Radio Network; producer of news and public affairs for WMOT-FM, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and news editor and producer for WLAC-AM, Nashville.

Dr. Dashiell has been named a University Professor for 1997-98, a student-based teaching award. With that award, Dr. Dashiell designed "Media Coverage of First Ladies," a course she taught in 1998. She is also the recipient of a 1995 Teaching Enhancement/Recognition Award from Ohio University's Office of the Provost.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Dashiell is the director of studies for the Honors Tutorial Program in the School of Journalism, the largest honors tutorial program at Ohio University. She is also the former director of the annual summer Ohio University High School Journalism Workshop.

Dr. Dashiell is an active member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). She served as the head, vice head/program chair and secretary for AEJMC's Minorities and Communication Division. Dr. Dashiell has served as a judge for a variety of broadcasting award competitions and a team member of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She has also been an invited participant in other professional workshops such as the Poynter Institute for Media Studies Broadcast Journalism Teaching Conference; the Indiana University Summer Minority Faculty Recruitment Program; and the Gannett-AEJMC Teachers Workshop at Indiana University.

Dr. Dashiell's publications include: "What Happens to Libel Cases After They Have Been at the Supreme Court," in David Pritchard's "Holding the Media Accountable" (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2000). "Law and Regulation in Japan," in Anne Cooper Chen's "Mass Communication in Japan" (Ames: Iowa State University Press, 1997); "The Power of Information," in Michael J. Bugeja's "Guide to Writing Magazine Nonfiction"(Boston: Allyn & Bacon, 1997); "Broadcast News Coverage of the O.J. Simpson Murder Case: Racist or Starstruck?" in Venise T. Berry and Carmen L. Manning-Miller's "Mediated Messages and African-American Culture: Contemporary Issues" (Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage, 1996); and "On the Air with O.J.," in Michael J. Bugeja's "Living Ethics: Developing Values in Mass Communication" (Boston: Allyn & Bacon/Paramount, 1995).

In the fall 2001 semester at Hampton, Dr. Dashiell will teach radio news reporting, TV reporting and the student newscast.
