The Psychology Major

Program Curricula

The completion of the major requires 120 credit hours, including two science courses with labs, two courses in mathematics including pre-calculus, and two semesters of a foreign language.  Students are encouraged to take classes that strengthen their writing and analytical skills.  Introduction to Psychology is a pre-requisite to the remaining 12 psychology courses that must be taken, although students may take as many psychology electives as they wish.  Social Psychology, Systems, Methods of Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Statistics and Abnormal, Development and Personality are core departmental offerings.

The Department requires students to engage in laboratory and field research in many of our courses. Our field study and internship courses also provide opportunities for majors to develop applied research and clinical skills in realistic settings.

To declare Psychology as a major an overall GPA of 2.5 must be achieved and students must maintain a GPA of 2.0.

Students wishing to teach at the elementary level may choose from three curricula sequences in the Psychology in Education program.  These include the Learning and Behavior Disorders sequence, the Early Childhood/Elementary, Pre K-5 sequence and the early Childhood with Counseling Strand. All of these sequences require specific additional courses in education and successful application to the Psychology in Education Program. Following a fifth year, students will receive a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree.

The minor in psychology requires 21 credit hours to include Introduction, Methods, Systems, one course in statistics and nine credits of psychology electives.
