Student-Initiated Research Project (OSEP) grants have
aided promising special education doctoral students for the
past 20 years, but they are not the only source of funding
available.
You should try your university, state education agency,
local foundations, and national organizations in your field
for funding opportunities. Organizations like the American
Educational Research Association provide fellowships,
including minority fellowships, as do other organizations
(see those listed below).

AERA & Spencer Foundation
Dissertation Fellowships
- Two minority fellowships for $10,000/year are
available through the American Educational Research
Association (AERA) to assist minority scholars in the
final two years of their doctoral programs. Contact:

- The AERA/Spencer Foundation awards 12 fellowships of
$16,000/year to doctoral students in educational
research. Contact: AERA, Spencer Fellowship, 1230 17th
Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Applications from
persons in traditionally underrepresented groups for the
AERA/Spencer fellowships are especially encouraged.
- AERA
Dissertation Grants Program with the National Science
Foundation (NSF) and National Center for Education
Statistics (NCES) awards up to $10,000 for 1-year
projects, or up to $20,000 for 2-year projects. Minority
researchers are strongly encouraged to apply. Topics may
cover a wide range of policy-related issues that include
but are not limited to: school persistence and career
entry; policies and practices related to achievement;
policies and practices that influence student and
parental attitudes; educational participation and
persistence (kindergarten through graduate school);
at-risk students; and early childhood education.
- The Spencer
Foundation awards up to 30 non-renewable fellowships
of $17,000 to support the completion of the dissertation.

APA Dissertation Research Awards
- The APA sponsors $1000 awards to approximately 50
students (who are APA student affiliates or associate
members) whose dissertation research reflects excellence
in scientific psychology through its
Dissertation
Research Awards.

Communication Disorders: Minority
Dissertation Research Grants in Human Communication
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and the Office of
Research on Minority Health (ORMH) provide small grants
(Minority
Dissertation Research Grants) to support doctoral
dissertation research in human communication for minority
doctoral candidates. Grant support is designed to aid the
research of new minority investigators and to encourage
minority individuals from a variety of academic
disciplines and programs to conduct research in hearing,
balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language.
Grants to support dissertation research will provide no
more than $30,000 in direct costs over the two-year
period, and no more than $25,000 in direct costs in any
one year.

Resources

FinAid, the Financial Aid Information Page
FinAid
contains a large number of links to a variety of databases
to search for fellowships and other funding from both
foundations, universities and other sources. It is sponsored

Mental Health Minority Fellowships
- The American Sociological Association offers 12-month fellowships
for beginning doctoral students interested in mental health and mental
illness research. The fellowships, funded through a National Institute
of Mental Health grant, offer an annual stipend of $10,000 and also
payment of tuition. Dissertation support up to $5,000 is also available.

- Student-Initiated Research (SIR) Projects support
doctoral student research projects focusing on special
education and related services for children and youth
with disabilities and early intervention services for
infants and toddlers. Nineteen projects (up to $20,000
per project) were awarded in 1996. OSEP recently
