Watts S. Humphrey founded the Software Process Program of theSoftware
Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He isa
Fellow of the Institute and is a research scientist on its staff. From1959
to 1986, he was associated with IBM Corporation, where hewas director
of programming quality and process. His publicationsinclude many
technical papers and eight books. His most recentbook is
Winning With Software: An Executive Strategy. He holdsfive
US. Patents. In 1991 he served on the Board of Examiners
forthe Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
He holds a bachelor's degree in physics from the University ofChicago,
a master's degree in physics from the Illinois Institute ofTechnology,
and a master's degree in business administration fromthe University
of Chicago. Mr. Humphrey was awarded an honoraryPh.D. degree
in software engineering by Embry Riddle AeronauticalUniversity
in 1998. In 2000, the Watts Humphrey Software QualityInstitute
in Chennai, India was named in his honor and the BoeingCorporation
presented him with an award for innovation andleadership in software
process improvement.
