Hampton University is looking for a Staff Accountant who will be responsible for keeping abreast of the reporting requirements as outlined by Federal, State, Private, Local and University regulations.  The successful candidate will be tasked with developing new procedures/worksheets; and implementing software system changes to comply with new reporting requirements.  They will use computer generated financial reports to compile, analyze and prepare cash management reports for University funds related to grants and contracts and will report directly to the Senior Staff Accountant/Grant Specialist.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will

• Compile, analyze and prepare complex annual, quarterly and monthly grant reports in accordance with applicable guidelines;
• Analyze actual expenditures to authorized expenditures;
• Meet and consults with project directors to review expenditures and encumbrances during the grant year;
• Prepare monthly billing for all University grants and contracts;
• Create new grants and contracts and assigns the appropriate fund, program function,  classification and revenue as it relates to the Grantor;
• Complete reports, prepares monthly journal entries, and responds to all applicable inquires.
  

Requirements

This position requires

• A bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent combination of training and experience;
  
• The the candidate have a working to mastery knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles;
• An excellent background in financial reports and accounting;
  
• The substantial ability to work with automated financial systems;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
• Previous professional accounting experience (emphasis in grants and contracts is preferred).
