Description

The Research Assistant will be primarily responsible for ensuring that faculty members have the necessary supplies to conduct their research and/or teach their laboratory courses. The laboratory manager will assist faculty by preparing the required solutions and reagents that are needed for the laboratory exercises. Additionally, this individual is responsible for ensuring that the teaching and research related instruments are maintained in good working order. The scientific equipment in the laboratories include: 300 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer; Gas Chromatograph; Ultraviolet/Visible Spectrophotometer; Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer; and a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph. In addition, the laboratory manager is responsible for ensuring that the required gases, liquids, and other supplies are purchased in a timely manner to ensure proper maintenance of the instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities are functional in nature, and needs to be performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assist faculty in laboratory setup.

  2. Maintain all teaching laboratory operations.

  3. Establish and set up protocols.

  4. Compound drugs (laboratory use).

  5. Purchasing and procurement of laboratory supplies and test agents.

  6. Order gases and other supplies for the upkeep of various instruments.

  7. Maintain laboratory equipment and call appropriate companies for equipment repair.

  8. Maintain accurate records and inventory.

  9. Ensure general upkeep of the teaching and research laboratories.

  10. Assist in disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals.

  11. Assist faculty in collecting and assessing data.

  12. All other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

Qualifications

  1. Minimum of a baccalaureate degree in basic sciences.

  2. Two or more years of laboratory managing or related experience and/or training including academic experience.

  3. Must be able to follow instructions and procedures pertaining to the task at hand.

  4. Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical procedures and journals.

  5. Must be familiar with Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Internet research skills. 

  6. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.

  7. Excellent oral and written skills required. 

  8. Certified Pharmacy Technician with at least two years’ experience preferred.
