Hampton University invites applications for a Research Associate that would be responsible for outreach activities and program management beginning in September 2012. The position will be offered through the National Science Foundation Award entitled, “Advanced Center for Laser Science and Spectroscopy (ACLaSS).” The continuation of this position is contingent on both satisfactory performance and continuation of funding. Salary will be commensurate with rank and/or level of experience.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Tidewater Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The ACLaSS has three research and education teams including: Laser Spectroscopy and Materials Modeling; Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Application; and Laser Remote Sensing. The goals of ACLaSS are listed below:
- To advance the research and education center with cutting edge laser sciences and spectroscopy.
- To develop and implement graduate and undergraduate educational modules.
- To provide extensive research and educational opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students.
- To strengthen the pipeline of students pursuing advanced degrees in science and technology through outreach activities and summer workshops.
- To provide educational opportunities in laser science and spectroscopy to high school teachers and students in grades K-12.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in outreach activities and program management of the NSF-funded ACLaSS. The program management segment entails preparation and coordination of center activities combined with management of the budget.
The outreach activities include: developing and maintaining outreach programs and partners, coordinating and participating in outreach activities, conducting research and preparing outreach education modules related to laser science and spectroscopy, identifying implementation objectives of outreach education modules, participating in training high/middle school science teachers, providing hands-on experience or demonstration for K-12 students, managing outreach materials for distribution, follow-up for the implementation of tools for outreach activity results, coordinating summer research internships for undergraduate students, developing center web dissemination, preparing annual reports for outreach activities, and conducting additional activities if needed.
The successful candidate will have earned a M.S. degree in a STEM area. Preference will be given to applicants with proposal/funding experience related to K-12 and undergraduate education.
