The Hampton University School of Liberal Arts invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Dean, a twelve month position beginning July 1, 2013. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, and nonsectarian institution. The School of Liberal Arts is comprised of two divisions---Arts & Humanities and Social & Behavioral Sciences. Approximately 600 students have selected majors in the School’s nine departments and programs: English, Fine & Performing Arts (Art, Theatre), Liberal Studies, Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish), Music, Political Science/History, International Relations, and Sociology/Criminal Justice. Students may also select training for the military through Army ROTC.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Dean works with the Dean in the daily operation and management of the school with respect to academic and administrative issues. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following: student academic issues and grievances, assessment, strategic planning, classroom observations, and grant writing. The Assistant Dean assumes authority for the functional operation of all aspects of the school in the absence of the Dean.
Requirements
A Ph.D. is required in any discipline falling under the auspices of the school. Preference will be given to applicants who specialize in the arts and humanities.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have administrative, management, and grant writing experience. Teaching on the college level is a plus since the successful candidate will be required to teach two courses each semester.
