The Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs will collaborate with the Director of Alumni Affairs to plan and implement programs, events and communications campaigns that will strategically engage alumni in the life of the University.  The Assistant Director will be responsible for effectively communicating and building relationships with alumni to increase participation and encourage financial support of Hampton.

Duties and Responsibilities

Management and Program Development

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of Reunion Weekend, Homecoming, the President’s Donor Reception and other alumni events, programs and activities.
  • Partner with alumni leaders, ambassadors and volunteers to raise funds for the university.
  • Manage and market the Member Advantage Program.
  • Support the NHAA, Inc. Board of Directors meetings and conferences.


Public Relations and Communications

  • Represent the Office of Alumni Affairs at meetings, events and speaking engagements.

  • Communicate effectively with alumni through personal phone calls, letters and visits.

  • Produce monthly e-newsletters, alumni spotlights and email marketing blasts.

  • Manage and maintain the department webpages, Alumni Online Community, email forwarding and online event registration.


  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in alumni relations or non-profit management, or a field that emphasizes relationship-building, fundraising, marketing or communications.

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills with the ability to work on a team.

  • The ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize while maintaining high standards of accuracy, quality and confidentiality.

  • The ability to generate and implement new ideas.

  • Provide overall management and office support as needed, including answering telephone, greeting visitors and hosting alumni events on and off campus.

  • Experience with Banner or other constituent database is preferred.

  • Must be willing to work extra hours during peak periods, including occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Includes some travel.
