The Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) at Hampton University is seeking applications for the position of Middle School Counselor.  ETS is a federally funded TRIO Program that assists middle and high school students  in pursuing postsecondary education.  ETS recruits and serves students in grades six through twelve throughout the target area schools in Hampton and Newport News.  This position will work primarily with middle school students in selected Hampton and Newport News middle schools. The person in this position also serves as the staff advisor to the Boys2Men Mentoring group and is responsible for recruiting Hampton University male upperclassmen to serve as mentors.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

The person chosen for this position will be responsible for recruiting in the middle schools and local community agencies, giving presentations about the program, coordinating and chaperoning  career tours, facilitating career workshops during the middle school sessions, conducting individual academic and career counseling sessions for each student,  and monitoring participant progress while enrolled in  middle school.  This position also oversees all mentoring activities of Boys2Men.  Other duties may be assigned by the program director. The middle school component meets on designated Saturdays during the school year.  The required Saturday hours for this position are 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. 

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required in Human Services, Education, Psychology, or Sociology.   Master’s in counseling preferred.

  • Experience in a similar position and/or at least 12 hours of graduate studies in counseling, education, psychology, sociology or human services.

  • At least one year’s experience working with youth of disadvantaged backgrounds in secondary school or college students.

  • Familiar with and/or able to administer and interpret educational guidance tests and measurement instruments.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Computer literate.
