The Department of Aviation at Hampton University invites applications for a nine-month faculty position starting on August 26, 2013. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Tidewater Peninsula in Hampton, Virginia. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  We seek faculty who can contribute vision, energy, and leadership, as well as creative individuals that will enhance curriculum development at a University where one person can truly make a difference.

The Department of Aviation offers Associate of Science (A.S.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in the following areas: Flight Education, and Aviation Management with concentrations in Air Traffic Control and Airport Administration. The objectives of the programs are (1) to prepare students for meaningful aviation careers within the government and aerospace industry and (2) to enable students to bring to aviation a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility to the public.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the field of professional pilot education and aviation management, coach the University’s Flight Team, collaborate with distinguished colleagues in Flight Operations, Air Traffic Management, and Aviation Management programs; and work with a highly-skilled and dedicated Flight Operations staff at the contract airport.  The teaching load is typically 12 or more credits per semester.  Applicants should also demonstrate a desire to serve the University community and a dedication to their own professional development.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a Master’s Degree in Aviation or a related field, and Federal Aviation Administration Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument and Certified Flight Instructor ratings.  Preference will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree in a related field.  An Airline Transport, Multi-engine, and Certified flight Instructor-Multi-engine and instrument ratings are highly desirable.  Additional qualifications include significant aviation experience, teaching experience in higher education, proven team-building skills, and the ability to think outside of the box to achieve goals.
