The Athletic Academic Advisor is responsible for academic advising, assist in study hall monitoring, and monitoring academic progress. The Athletic Academic Advisor must assist in helping to formulating and enforcing policies and procedures which will keep the athletics program in compliance with national, conference and institutional rules and regulations. This individual will also help our student-athletes continue to matriculate and graduate from Hampton University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for advising student-athletes in conjunction with academic affairs
  • Responsible for assisting with the program design to enhance the academic part of the student-athlete experience at Hampton University
  • Work to improve student athletes’ academic preparation, enhancement, and performance
  • Responsible for working along with academic affairs to support the student-athletes academic matters such as selection of major area of study, course selection, and academic performance
  • Responsible for working with academic affairs/student affairs to ensure student-athletes with learning disabilities are receiving accommodations
  • Work in collaboration with coaches, academic advisors and other University and non-university constituents to facilitate success of assigned students, assist in determining NCAA eligibility for continued enrollment and/or for competition
  • Responsible for monitoring the academic progress of the University’s student-athletes
  • Assist in pre-registration and registration for student-athletes
  • Provide weekly reports to Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support
  • Assist in supervision of study hall
  • Assist in recruitment activities to academic success
  • Assist with NCAA waiver/appeal process
  • All other duties assigned


Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to manage complex issues and relationships, experience at an NCAA institution, conference or professional sports organization, experience working with volunteer boards and committee, demonstrated ability to lead and motivate coaches and/or staff to accomplish external relations goals.The position will be required to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, and occasional travel.


Minimum requirement: Bachelors’ degree required; Experience in Athletic advising and/or NCAA compliance preferred.
