Description

The Hampton University School of Engineering and Technology invites applications for the position of Mechanical and Electrical Laboratory Technician in the Department of Engineering. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The primary function is to maintain the teaching and the research laboratory facilities in the Olin Engineering Building. The building has Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering laboratories and a mechanical workshop. The work involves the following tasks:

  • Setting up laboratory worktable with the necessary test instruments to carry out lab work by students

  • Identifying defective lab instruments and lab facilities and arrange for repair or discard defective units, as appropriate, in an approved manner

  • Carrying out duties assigned by the Chair of the Department of Engineering and the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology

Requirements

The candidate is expected to provide at least 3 references who can confirm his/her abilities and skills.

Qualifications

The expected education level is training and experience in maintaining laboratory instruments related to general engineering facilities. The preferred skills are:

  •  Ability to calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair simple process equipment and electronic instruments
  • Ability to understand the applications of laboratory instruments, such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, DC power supply, Signal generators, chemical apparatus and simple fabrication machinery and tools

  • Ability to test the instruments for proper functionality, identifying defective instruments

  • Ability to understand engineering documents and engineering drawings, and simple electrical circuit diagrams.

  • Experience with lathe, wielding, drilling, milling, grinding, machines will be a plus.
