Description

A part-time temporary research assistant position is available at the Hampton University Cancer Research Center, for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in statistical and molecular biology. The laboratory focuses on cancer genomics and genetic epidemiology, the investigation of the molecular basis of germ-line susceptibility alleles, discovery of somatic mutations in tumors, and gene expression analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will provide an opportunity to learn cutting-edge techniques, including genomics and robotic-based high-throughput experiments. The laboratory uses a combination of computational and experimental approaches – using DNA and RNA from cancer cases and controls, human tumor cells grown in cell culture, and primary tumor samples– to understand the genomics of cancer, identify therapeutic targets, and predict/test better forms of treatment. Related projects in the laboratory include the investigation of: 1. The genetic factors associated with risk factors for breast and prostate cancer; 2. Gene expression changes associated with tumor subtypes; and 3. Molecular toxicology of proton therapy.

Requirements

A bachelors or masters’ degree in biology, molecular biology, biotechnology or a related field is required. However, additional training will be available for gene expression and next generation sequencing analysis. A strong background in cancer biology and experience in population research and/or analysis of large datasets is highly desirable.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate will be highly motivated, have previous experience working in a lab environment, andhave some experience in the following tasks:

  • Routine molecular biology tasks (PCR, Nucleic acid isolation (DNA and RNA), etc.)

  • Bioinformatics

  • Additionally, some computational (for imputation and analysis of gene expression and next generation sequencing datasets) and programming (such as with R, SAS, STATA, Perl, or Python) experience is desirable
