The Hampton University Department of Political Science and History invites nominations and applications for a full-time, nine-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning August 2017. The Department seeks to hire a specialist in United States History, with strengths in intellectual history and foreign policy.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the city of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. 
The Department of Political Science and History is an essential part of the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and offers baccalaureate degrees in Political Science, History, and International Studies.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate courses in History, advise departmental majors, hold regular office hours, serve on committees, publish original scholarship, acquire external funding, engage in service, and participate in the general life of the institution.


Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree in History or related field, have higher education teaching experience, and have success with the submission and award of grants. Ability to teach a variety of introductory and upper-level courses in American history required; ability to teach introductory courses in World Civilization, historical theory, and methods is also required. Although there is an expectation of hiring at the Assistant Professor rank, we will consider filling the position at a different rank depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.  Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.  For the rank of Assistant Professor, publications are preferred; for the rank of Associate Professor, publications are required.
