The Hampton University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson at the rank of Associate Professor (or higher) beginning in the 2018 fall semester.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is approved (rather than accredited) by the American Chemical Society (ACS) through the Committee on Professional Training (CPT) and offers three baccalaureate degrees by which students may receive ACS certified degrees.  The three baccalaureate degree tracks are as follows:   (1) B.S. in Chemistry - Traditional; (2) B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensic Chemistry; and (3) B.S. in Biochemistry.  The department also offers a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, and Masters of Teaching. In addition to its majors, the Department provides service courses for other departments within, and outside of, the School of Science.  Those include: Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Marine and Environmental Science, Nursing, Pre-Pharmacy, and Physics.  The current personnel consist of 13 faculty members, one laboratory supervisor and one secretary.  The faculty actively engages in research in the five main divisions of chemistry:  analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry.  Another research emphasis is in chemistry education practice. 



Duties and Responsibilities

The Chairperson in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry serves as both an administrator and a faculty member, and is expected to provide effective leadership in both roles.  The Chairperson reports directly to the Dean and the Assistant Dean of the School of Science.  S/he is expected to execute a number of duties including the following:


  • Serve as administrative officer responsible for developing the short and long-range plans for the academic unit;
  • Maintain departmental educational program(s) which meet the guidelines for approval by the American Chemical Society through the Committee for Professional training (CPT);
  • Maintain a viable and competitive academic program;
  • Obtain external funds from grants and research projects through personal initiative as well as through assistance to departmental faculty in writing proposals and carrying out research.


  • The qualified applicant must have an earned doctorate in chemistry from an accredited institution.  Ideally, the candidate would have specialized in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or physical chemistry.
  • The applicant must currently hold the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
  • The applicant must have a minimum of seven (7) years of teaching experience at the university- level.
  • The successful candidate must be experienced with acquiring and/or maintaining American Chemical Society’s approval of chemistry programs through the Committee for Professional Training.
  • The successful candidate must be committed to increasing diversity in the chemical sciences, encouraging underrepresented students to pursue advanced degrees and support the mission of HBCUs.
  • Candidates who have had previous experience in college administration are preferred.
  • The successful candidate must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, a history of scholarly achievement, and the ability to organize effectively.
