Hampton University is looking for an experienced Network Manager to architect, design, engineer, implement, maintain, and support Hampton University’s campus area network (CAN) and to lead the growth of the university’s network infrastructure. The highly qualified candidate will lead a network engineering team that is responsible for designing, engineering, and developing scalable, maintainable, highly available network architectures that meet current and future university objectives and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Duties and Responsibilities

Train Sr. and Jr. Network Administrators to configure, install, and support various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS)

• Direct and perform high-level network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations

• Monitor performance and ensure system availability and reliability

• Plan, monitor, and analyze system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning

• Provide Level-3 support and troubleshooting to resolve issues

• Draft and establish configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure

• Select, test, and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the university’s security team

• Liaise with external vendors and other campus IT personnel for problem resolution


Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience—or targeted, technical training—in operations, influencing technology selection and projects

• 5+ years of technical operations experience a plus

• CCNP or higher (CCIE and/or CISSP highly valued)

• CompTIA Security+ or CASP certification desired

• Certification with Linux, Windows, or macOS (OS X) operations systems desirable

• Experience or certifications in Project Management (PMI/CompTIA Project+) a plus


Ability to translate technical recommendations into a visual format for presentation to non-technical stakeholders

• Extensive experience with maintaining a campus or metropolitan network infrastructure

• Expert fluency and experience with Cisco wireless, network switches, routers, and firewalls

• Proficient knowledge of protocol analyzers (e.g. Wireshark)

• Ability to solve complex problems by successive decomposition

• Deep understanding of networking protocols (e.g., IPSEC, HSRP, BGP, OSPF, 802.11, QoS)

• Solid understanding of the OSI and TCP/IP models

• Familiarity with network monitoring applications (PRTG, Solarwinds, etc.)

• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office application including Microsoft Visio and Project
