The Alumni Communications Specialist develops mutually beneficial relationships between Hampton University, the Office of Alumni Affairs and its alumni. This position is responsible for crafting and disseminating the University message directly to our alumni to begin to engage with them in a way to reclaim those graduates that have not sought any affiliation with the Association or the Alumni Office post-graduation. Through digital and interpersonal engagement strategies including email marketing, social media outreach, events and personal interaction, the Alumni Communications Specialist creates pathways for alumni participation that advance the goals of the University and develops a strong pipeline of future advocates, donors and volunteers. The Alumni Communications Specialist also supports the Office of Alumni Affairs overall content and editorial strategy, including the Hampton Alumni Magazine, social media channels and major print and digital projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

Alumni Engagement Strategy and Implementation - 60%

  1. The Strategic Goal is to improve alumni engagement among alumni that have no immediate affiliation with the National Hampton Alumni Association or that have been inactive with the University for two years or more. The Objective is to engage new and lost alumni that have not been active with the University to develop a pipeline of future alumni advocates, donors and volunteers.

      • Develop and implement digital alumni engagement strategy, including email marketing, the Hamptonian e-newsletter, social media (especially LinkedIn), and other platforms. Support major gifts and annual giving communication campaigns as needed.

      • Conduct in-person programs designed to engage alumni with the University and the Office of Alumni Affairs, including major annual events, periodic regional events; meetings and networking events with alumni in Virginia, and during regional travel.

      • Develop personalized outreach efforts to engage alumni and inform them of ways to connect back to the University on campus and off-site (Visitation opportunities, personalized event invites, etc.)

      • Support the Office of Development and alumni/individual giving staff’s efforts to engage high-level alumni prospects and to develop key communication strategies for engaging each target segment and individual alumni based on giving history, interests, etc.

Communications Content Strategy and Support - 40%

  1. The Strategic Goal is to ensure the alumni audience is aware of the primary activities and achievements of the University; to enhance the image of alumni programming; and to promote the University’s mission and long-term strategic outlook. The Objective is to develop a strong pipeline of University information that can be shared with alumni and positioned as an “insider’s look” at what is happening at Hampton.

      • Work closely with the Office of the President Staff, University Relations and other key internal departments to gather relevant content on key University projects, accomplishments and activities to keep alumni constituency groups knowledgeable of University news.

      • Partner with the University Relations team to develop key University and alumni content for a regular Alumni Magazine release (Fall/Spring).

      • Partner with the Alumni Affairs communications team to develop feature stories showcasing alumni. Develop editorial calendar.


Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations or a related field. A minimum of 1 year experience in a communications/marketing role is preferred.


We are looking for an experienced writer with excellent communication skills to take a proactive role within a busy and successful Alumni & Development Office. The successful candidate will have experience with editing marketing collateral, letters, publications and producing online communications-- social media management and best practices. Digital and print content management preferred.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent editorial and proofreading skills

  • High level of computer literacy. Proficient in use of a database and in the use of Microsoft Office products (especially Word, Excel and desk-top publishing)

  • Basic web-editing and e-marketing

  • Working knowledge of a full range of major social media platforms

  • At least 12 months experience in producing print publications or a communications/marketing role

  • Proven experience in dealing with external suppliers in print and design

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team

  • Extremely well organized

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Works effectively under pressure and can keep to deadlines
