The Defensive Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of the defense.  The Defensive Coordinator is responsible for the department of the team’s defensive game plan and during game, determines the defensive alignments and plays to run. Responsible for assist in directing the student-athletes to conduct themselves on and off of the field in such ways that bring credit to their team and Hampton University.  Assist in planning and conducting of practices and games.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting with recruiting prospective student-athletes for the football program.

  • Assist with off-season conditioning as assigned by the head coach.

  • Work with the strength and conditioning coaches to develop and communicate to the football players a summer training program to ensure that athletes return for fall football in the best possible physical condition.

  • Assist with team travel arrangements and team travel as assigned.

  • Responsible for serving as a liaison between student-athletes and athletic academic support team.

  • Responsible for monitoring student-athletes progress, time management and study hall.

  • Required to travel and work evenings and weekends.

  • Other duties assigned.


Organizational Relationships:

The Defensive Coordinator reports to the Head Football Coach.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to coach outside areas in hot and cold weather, and the exposure to elements such as rain, snow, and loud noises.  The duties require moderate to active physical activity, handling of weights and objects weighing 25 to 50 pounds, and standing or waling more than four hours per day.


Require Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have the working knowledge and compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.  Must possess strong organizational skills that allow the defensive coach to keep track of player’s schedules, plays, formations and practice routines. Must also possess strong leadership skills.
