The Hampton University School of Liberal Arts and Education invites nominations and applications for an Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs beginning August 2018.  The Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Liberal Arts and Education manages duties associated with the Schools academic programs. The executive functions of the position involve assessing, planning, developing, and managing the primary areas of academic programs and faculty development. The Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs carries out these functions under the supervision and in consultation with the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education. 

The Assistant Dean will also teach two courses in one of the following academic areas: 1) English; 2) Pre-Law, 3) Political Science, 4) History, or 5) Psychology.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Dean in administering and overseeing programs in the School of Liberal Arts and Education.
  • Assists the Dean in the management of the curriculum and the development of academic programs.
  • Supervises and coordinates various department activities.
  • Assists in implementing strategic planning specific to programs within the School, including grantsmanship, enrollment and staffing.
  • Serves as a resource and referral source for faculty seeking various types of assistance.
  • Collaborates with the Dean and other department entities to oversee and ensure quality academic programs.
  • Provides direction and assistance in preparation of budget requests; monitors budgeting expenditures at all levels. 
  • Monitors departmental accreditation processes. 
  • Manages performance evaluations for faculty and staff in the School.
  • Initiates response in Dean’s office to faculty concerns.
  • Manages various faculty reports and records.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education.

  • Skills in development, implementation and execution of programs. 
  • Minimum of Doctoral Degree.
