A summer research assistant fellow position is available at the Hampton University Cancer Research Center for highly motivated individual with training and background in nursing, psychology, sociology, behavioral health, public health or other clinical training. The Hampton University Cancer Research Center focuses on the biological basis of cancer disparities. We will be launching a study that engages community members and patients in research, as well as collect biological samples from research participants.

Duties and Responsibilities

The research assistant will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of recruitment and retention goals, as well as the collection of biological sample from patients. Specifically, the research assistant will identify appropriate volunteers, screen, interview and recruit candidates into the study. They must be familiar with inclusion and exclusion criteria for each protocol and purpose of the protocols. The research assistant will also conduct and coordinate the different steps for the research participants including: database management, cold calling and answer incoming calls for data base entry; contact and screen prospective subjects to determine eligibility for clinical trial participation; and follow-up on various recruitment tasks to ensure the timely completion of the study recruitment. At the end, the research assistant will draw blood from the patient and process the sample.


A bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing, psychology, sociology, behavioral health, or public health is required. A bachelors’ degree may be considered appropriate if the candidate has the requisite experience to perform the tasks described above.


The research assistant must have excellent people skills, medical background or familiarity with medical terminology. The candidate must also have a certificate in phlebotomy, have taken phlebotomy courses, or be experienced in phlebotomy. We are looking for outgoing applicants with experience in engaging community members and patients in educational activities and research. However, additional training will be available and provided.
