Description

The Hampton University School of Engineering and Technology invites nominations and applications for highly qualified candidates for a full-time nine (9) month tenure-track position in the area of aviation.  Please note that tenure-track positions are offered at the discretion of the University conditional upon expertise, credentials, and qualifications of the successful candidate(s).   The anticipated start is August 20, 2018.

 

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, non-sectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia. The School of Engineering and Technology includes the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Architecture, and Department of Aviation. The programs are ABET, NAAB, and AABI accredited. 

The Department of Aviation offers five degree programs in Aviation--two Associate of Science (A.S.) degree options and three Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree options.  The objectives of the programs are (1) to prepare students for meaningful aviation careers within the government and aerospace industry and (2) to enable students to bring to aviation a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility to the public.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate on various research initiatives (including some of an interdepartmental nature). Primary responsibilities will be teaching undergraduate courses in the Aviation Management program (Airport Administration), service and scholarly activities. The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills and must be committed to the continuous improvement process and the outcome-based assessment of the programs. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following qualifications; (1) an aviation-related terminal degree, (2) recent experience in the airport operations industry or an aviation academic setting, (3) experience with a University Part 139 Airport Operations Training program.

Additional responsibilities for this position include:

  • Advise Department of Aviation students

  • Monitor overall student progress
  • Serve as faculty advisor for student organizations
  • Develop and foster aviation industry connections
  • Participate in recruitment events
  • Serve on departmental and university related committees
  • Provide Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) leadership
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Aviation or a related field, and a commitment to teaching excellence, service and scholarship. Appropriate airport operations and teaching certifications and recent aviation industry experience are highly desirable. Airport operation credentials may include, but are not limited to, American Association of Airport Executives certification, International Air Transport Association coursework, certification, and airport operations on-the-job training.

  • Can contribute to the vision of the University as a whole.
