The Hampton University Department of Fine and Performing Arts invites nominations and applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 20, 2018.


Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.


The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in art and theatre, and is a viable, innovative, multi-faceted program designed to meet the current and future needs of Hampton university students. The eight semester (four year) curriculum in the area of art leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in either Comprehensive (Studio) Art or Graphic Design.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach 12 credit hours per semester in the area of art. Oversee all operational aspects of the graphic design lab and the graphic design program. Collaborate with faculty and administrators in the visual and performing arts on strategic planning, program development, student advising, assessment of student learning, student recruiting and retention, and committee service. Attend and assist with events such as recruitment fairs and visits to high schools, which promote the University’s visual and performing arts programs. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further scholarly research and creative scholarship. Instructor will be expected to maintain current in the graphic design field and lead program development as the field changes.


Minimum qualifications are Master’s degree in graphic design or a closely related field from an accredited institution including a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the coursework specifically related to graphic design. Demonstrated achievement as a graphic designer through a portfolio that documents professional activity and exhibits. Demonstrated achievement as an arts educator through a portfolio that documents student artwork. Proficiency in teaching visual design, the design process, and design software. Ability to teach web design highly desirable. Knowledge of gaming software is a plus, but not mandatory. Excellent communication and leadership skills.
