Hampton University is accepting nominations and applications for the full-time position of Military Student Counselor/ VA Certifying Official position. The central focus of this position is evaluating transfer credits, responding to prospect inquiries, advising current students, recruiting, and certifying military-related populations. The Military Student Counselor/ VA Certifying Official is responsible for achieving enrollment goals, assisting applicants, and processing VA education paperwork for military-related students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate regionally accredited transcripts and Joint Services Transcripts for transfer credit.

  • Respond to requests for information regarding college programs.

  • Notify Veterans Affairs upon student enrollment, accurately identifying programof pursuit and indicate credit hours, term dates, transfer units accepted and proper progression toward approved program.

  • Process all military/veteran paperwork and assist in the admissions process.

  • Support academic advisement for Continuing Education and Professional Studies and Hampton Online.

  • Assist with student planning and coordinating his/her program of study from entry through degree completion and prepare a program overview that clearly delineates courses necessary toward degree completion.

  • Maintain historic documents and data regarding veteran files according to federal guidelines.

  • Communicate all department changes to federal and state regulations, and university policies pertaining to military-related students.

  • Responsible for planning and directing recruitment programs and special activities.

  • Implement communication plan, send weekly updates, and actively call non-registered students.

  • Establish and organize enrollment management student events.

  • Assist and support Director of Enrollment Management with education, and career fair events.

  • Recruit active duty, reservists, veterans, and civilian students.


  • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Services or a related field is preferred.

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college preferred and two years of related work experience preferably in higher education.

  • Previous experience certifying military-related experience is a plus.
