Description

Assist with the implementation and delivery of efficient and effective work flow procedures for the Periodicals Department by processing materials, performing database and acquisitions maintenance activities for the online catalog, and resolving problems for patrons.

*This position is grant-funded.

Duties and Responsibilities

The job duties of the Library Assistant for Periodicals are as follow: 

  • Perform physical and database maintenance activities by implementing corrective actions, updating records, etc. 
  • Use online and paper-based ordering systems to place and monitor orders with approved vendors of books, periodicals, and audiovisual media.
  • Perform physical processing according to established procedures. Physical processing may include application of barcodes and/or other labels, application of property stamps, application of security devices, re-housing audiovisual materials, and application of dust jacket protectors as needed.
  • Maintain statistical data on periodicals and acquisitions activities.
  • Assist with team projects such as shelf reading and shifting as assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of periodicals and acquisitions developments, trends, and best practices by participating in on-going training activities.
  • Supervise student workers as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum one year previous experience working in a library environment.

  • Knowledge of specialized library software, including OCLC and library database management systems.

  • Knowledge of computer applications.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Customer service experience.

  •  Ability to pay attention to details.

  •  High level of data input accuracy.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
