The Operations Research Analyst supports the data, research, and analytic functions of Hampton University. The Analyst collects, analyzes, synthesizes, and presents institutional data related to student success, operational efficacy, strategic planning, predictive analytics, and other factors that affect the university and reporting requirements for both internal and external audiences. The Analyst will utilize a range of analytic methods to aid the university in making informed decisions. The ideal candidate is comfortable using mathematical modeling and other optimizing methods to formulate, apply, develop, and interpret information that assists management with decision-making, policy formulation, or other managerial functions. Analytic methods include summary statistics, statistical testing, time-series forecasting, and predictive modeling. This technical role requires extracting and manipulating data using SQL and perform analysis in SPSS. The Analyst works collaboratively with other members of the Operations Analysis and Research team to advance the strategic use of data throughout the institution to improve the efficacy of practices that influence student success. Responsibilities may vary, as data analysis needs change over time.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uses and implements a variety of software products and data visualization tools to conduct predictive data analyses, illustrate and interpret trends, and provide information in a logical and contextual manner for enhanced understanding

  • Study and analyze information about alternative courses of action to determine which plan will offer the best outcomes.

  • Draft reports summarizing findings supporting academic and administrative planning, policy formulation, and evaluation.

  • Extract and manipulate data using SQL. Develop database objects.

  • Experience in designing, organizing, and managing multiple complex projects simultaneously and with meeting deadlines.

  • Define data requirements, gather, and validate information, applying judgment and statistical tests.

  • Evaluate data quality.

  • Apply mathematical principles or statistical approaches to solve problems in scientific or applied fields.

  • Determine appropriate methods for data analysis.

  • This person must be detail-oriented, yet flexible, with the ability to manage multiple high-level ad hoc priorities, as well as routine projects throughout the year.

  • This position reports directly to the Director of Operations Analysis and Research.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university.

  • Minimum of four years’ of professional experience conducting analyses and research, data quality management, and reporting, preferably in a university setting or relevant technical field experience solving analytical problems using predictive analysis and other quantitative approaches.

  • Expertise in understanding, manipulating and querying large data sets with complex file structures.

  • Evidence of statistical analyses and research methodologies with large complex datasets on a statistical software package (such as SPSS, STATA, R, or similar tools).

  • Experience developing and producing reporting using Tableau, SPSS, or similar applications.

  • Experience using data to illustrate trends and perform predictive analysis.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of qualitative research analysis, methodologies and best practices.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Exemplary critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to exceptional work quality standards.

  • Excellent customer services skills.

  • Proficiency with BANNER is preferred, but not required.
