The William R. Harvey Leadership Institute has selected February’s Leadership Fellow of the Month – Ongelique M. Sherman, a junior finance major from Atlanta, Ga.  As the founder of her very own business, ONGIEMARIES, Sherman has used her talents to touch the lives of others in her hometown, as well as on the campus of Hampton University.

At the age of nine, Sherman was diagnosed with Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.  During the summer of her freshman year of high school, Sherman learned how to create purses at a summer cancer camp.  Once her peers began to show interest and purchase her products, her mom helped her realize that this could actually be a business.  Sherman later decided to donate 5% of her sales to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in hopes of finding a cure for cancer.

“Everyone’s life has been affected by cancer whether it is personally or through a family member or friend.  So, I believe people can kind of relate and appreciate what I am doing,” Sherman said.

According to Sherman, the products of ONGIEMARIES vary in size and design.  Customers can personalize the item that they choose with things that best describe them or things they like.  The audience of her product ranges from high schoolers to college kids, but also includes a few customers above and below that target.

As a member of the Greer Dawson Wilson Student Leadership Program and the Gamma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she still manages to continue to enhance her overall image.  It is obvious to see that she serves as a living testimony of how a person can transform his/her trials into triumph.  In the words of Sherman, God does not put more on your plate than you can handle.  You can make it through any situation.  You just have to have faith and never give up.
