06/17/09 HU TARGETS MINORITY STUDENTS FOR SWIM LESSONS
  Hampton, VA -With the help of a Hampton Roads Red Cross grant, Hampton University is offering swim lessons to Newport News and Hampton middle school students this summer. HU lifeguards and Red Cross water safety instructors are teaching the lessons, and bathing suit attire is provided for students.

05/29/09 STUDENTS WIN FIRST PLACE AT NASA PRE-SERVICE TEACHER CONTEST
  Hampton, VA -Students from Hampton University received first place at the NASA/Pre-Service Teacher Program STEM Lesson Plan Contest on April 23 at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.  These future teachers were required to develop, implement and submit a documented lesson plan incorporating the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

05/13/09 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES THE CLASS OF 2009
  Hampton, VA -Harold Ford, Jr. served as the keynote speaker at the 139th Annual Hampton University Commencement Exercises on May 10 in Armstrong Stadium. Ford told the graduates to ask themselves the questions, “Who are we?” and “What will we do with who we are?”  He also asked the graduates to determine whether they will be the “shapers of change or the chasers of change.”  There were 1,020 degrees conferred, 856 undergraduate degrees and 164 graduate and professional degrees.

05/12/09 HU DEAN ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE AT J-SCHOOL
  Hampton, VA -Tony Brown has announced his retirement as the first dean of Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at the end of the academic year. Brown will remain in his current role as president of Tony Brown Productions, Inc. in New York City and as a featured speaker across the nation.  He also plans to complete his fourth book and remain active in promoting the need for English fluency.
