HU, Tom Joyner Foundation Kick Off Campaign

Local businesses will present checks to HU at kickoff event

Hampton, VA - Hampton University will kickoff its Tom Joyner Foundation “School of the Month” Fundraising Campaign on Thursday, Jan. 24 at noon in the Student Center Ballroom, 135 Marshall Ave. in Hampton.  This festive event will include check presentations to Hampton University from local businesses, comments from a representative of the Tom Joyner Foundation and entertainment by the Hampton University pep band and cheerleaders.

The Tom Joyner Foundation, a major driving force in raising money for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) since 1998, has kicked off an aggressive fundraising scholarship campaign for Hampton University.

The Foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner, said Hampton University was chosen as part of its on-going effort to assist these HBCUs in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending these institutions.

Hampton University has been chosen as the “School of the Month” for October 2008 and will be featured on the Tom Joyner Show, which airs locally on 105.3 KISS FM, that month.  The University in partnership with the Tom Joyner Foundation will raise funds through October.  The Foundation has raised more than $25 million over the past seven years to help thousands of students at some 80 colleges.

The kickoff event is free and open to the public.  Refreshments and giveaways will be provided.  For more information please call 757-727-5231.
