HU Professor Receives Outstanding Faculty Award
Hampton, VA - Dr. Doyle Temple, professor of physics and chair of the physics department at Hampton University, received the state's highest honor for professors. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia announced on Wednesday that 12 faculty members from Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities were selected as recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Faculty Award (OFA).
"Dr. Temple is an accomplished educator and researcher," said HU Provost Dr. Pamela Hammond. "The rich experience he provides his students in the research centers and summer internship programs is a great example of Hampton University's commitment to teaching excellence."
Temple has taught at HU for almost 16 years. After becoming chair of the department in 1994, he was instrumental in guiding the new physics Ph.D. program that was established in 1992 to become the first Ph.D. program at HU.
Temple has served as the director of three major research centers: the Research Center for Optical Physics, the Center for Lidar and Atmospheric Sciences Students, and the Center for Laser Sciences and Spectroscopy. Temple has also served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on projects totaling more than $20 million dollars in research and education grants. He is author or co-author of over 80 publications and conference presentations in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He is also the inventor on a patent for holographic data storage using cylindrical media.
Temple’s efforts have provided more than 70 students with state-of-the-art research projects in the research centers and in summer undergraduate research internship programs. He served as research advisor for 4 post-doctoral fellows, 2 Ph.D. students, 2 M.S. students, and numerous undergraduates.
Temple earned his B.S. in physics from Southern University and his Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
This year marks the 24th anniversary of the awards program, which honors faculty members for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration and public service. Each of the 12 recipients will receive an engraved award and a $5,000 check underwritten by the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources. The OFA program is administered by SCHEV and funded by a grant from the Dominion Foundation, which has fully supported the OFA program since 2005.
