HU Celebrates Black History Month 2008

Event Schedule

Hampton, VA - Hampton University is celebrating Black History Month with several campus - wide events throughout the month:

On Monday, Feb. 4, the month's opening ceremony "A Meeting With The Elders" is scheduled for 7 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be in the Student Center Atrium. The program is a kickoff to inform the school community of other events throughout the month, and will include spoken word performances by Karega Bailey and presentations from fraternities and sororities.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, a seminar series entitled "How Did the Root Get Broken?" will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium. Part One is the State of the Black Man address.

On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the "How Did the Root Get Broken?" seminar series will continue with the State of the Black Woman address at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium.

Also, the Lunchbox Theater Essay Contest begins with "Are HBCU's Useless?" from noon to 2 p.m. at the Student Center Atrium.

In addition, the film "Banished" by Marco Williams will be featured at 5:30 p.m. in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications Auditorium. The documentary examines communities where entire African-American populations were expelled overnight. After the viewing, a brief question and answer period with Williams is scheduled. The event is free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, The Black Heritage Extravaganza will be held at 7 p.m. in Ogden Hall. A theatrical production of "Strange Fruit In A Foreign Land" will be performed. The event is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the "How Did the Root Get Broken?" seminar series will continue with The State of Black Love and Relationships, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium

On Friday, Feb. 22, the Black History Month Cultural Explosion will be held from noon to 3 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium. The event includes a live student art show, music, spoken word, a cultural foods fair and more. The event is free and open to the public.
