HU Museum hosts New Power Generation 2008 Art Competition
Hampton, VA - An opening reception for a new art exhibit entitled New Power Generation 2008, a nationally juried exhibition, will be held on 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 8. The Hampton University Museum exhibition, which features 23 artists and 42 works, will run from Feb. 8 to July 26.
Sonji Hunt - Architectural Element I
The exhibition features artists of African descent that work as educators, graphic designers, architects and practicing artists. Their displayed works give the university's museum a chance to focus its attention on emerging and working artists making headway in the arts. Competition participants are from different states, including California, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, North Carolina and Florida.
Crystal Johnson - Sick and Tired, 2006
The competition winner will be announced at the opening at 6:30 p.m. by Juror Napoleon Jones-Henderson, after which he will give a gallery talk. Henderson is a mixed media artist whose art and educational career spans 30 years. He is currently executive director of the Research Institute of African and African Diaspora Arts, Inc. in Roxbury, Mass. Henderson has exhibited in the United States and internationally, and is an associate professor of art at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.
