HU Dean Honored as Humanitarian
Hampton, VA -Hampton University Nursing Dean and Professor Dr. Pamela Hammond was one of six persons selected for the Virginia Center For Inclusive Communities 2009 Humanitarian of the Year award. The 41st Annual Peninsula Chapter Humanitarian Awards Dinner is Feb. 26 at the Newport News Marriott at City Center.
Since 1963, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has presented Humanitarian Awards annually to one or more persons.The Humanitarian Awards Dinners honor individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, according to the organization’s website.
Hammond was first named dean of the HU School of Nursing in 1998, and again in 2007. She helped spearhead several initiatives at HU, including the university becoming the first HBCU to offer a doctorate in nursing program. She has several professional nursing affiliations, including the National League for Nursing, the American Nurses Association, and the Association of Black Nursing Faculty.
“I am humbled to be among recipients of the 2009 Humanitarian of the Year Award. I was honored by the nomination and even more appreciative to have been selected,” Hammond said. “As I stand on the shoulders of past honorees, I will strive to maintain a commitment to diversity among people and to the communities in which they live.”
Charlie W. Hill, executive vice president of human resources for Landmark Communications, Inc., and a 1986 HU graduate, will also be recognized as a Humanitarian of the Year.
